TORONTO, ON, October 1, 2025 —Today, Circular Innovation Council kicks-off its annual Circular Economy Month campaign that mobilizes Canadians to rethink how products are designed, made, used, and managed – with an added focus on embracing a Buy Canadian mindset.
This year’s theme A Stronger Community for All has never been more important for Canadians as we face trade and economic uncertainty. Based on simple environmental principals, the circular economy is emerging as a practical and scalable solution to stabilize markets, create jobs, and achieve environmental goals – while helping Canada navigate recessionary pressures.
“Focusing on local opportunities and Canadian-made products actually supports the circular economy by shortening supply chains and reducing resource extraction, strengthening our Nation’s economy and protecting the environment.” observed Jo-Anne St. Godard, Executive Director of Circular Innovation Council.
Globally, the circular economy is projected to unlock $4.5 trillion in economic growth and generate over six million jobs. In Canada alone, the potential is significant:
- Six circular industrial sectors already support more than 371,000 jobs and avoid 1.6M tonnes of CO2 emissions annually.
- For plastics, a circular transition could add 42,000 jobs by 2030 and cut emissions by 1.8M tonnes annually.
- Eliminating avoidable food waste could return $58B to the economy—feeding 3.7M Canadian families for a year.
- The second-hand economy in Canada is valued at $30B annually, saving the average family of four $1,150 per year.
“The circular economy has vast untapped potential,” says St. Godard. “Many Canadians already participate daily as they make choices that consider the impacts of packaging and products they are buying. Circular Economy Month highlights and celebrates successes and encourages broader adoption by everyone to address economic and environmental challenges.”
