The Gifted Thrifter Contest (Nova Scotia)
Details
To celebrate Circular Economy Month and Waste Reduction Week, Divert NS will be highlighting the importance of thrifting and buying second-hand to extend the life of our items and divert textiles from landfills. To bring light to this important topic, we will be holding a contest called The Gifted Thrifter, which encourages Nova Scotians to share a photo of their favourite thrifted outfit (#fitcheck!) for a chance to win a Thrifting Experience for Two ($500 to the thrift store of their choice and $50 to a local café). In addition to the contest, there will be events taking place across the province that celebrate how we can “Swap, Share, Thrift and Repair” to reduce waste. We have also updated our Community Resources page so you can find ways to “Swap, Share, Thrift, and Repair” throughout the year. Visit www.divertns.ca/wrw to learn more about the contest, find events near you, and access useful resources about thrifting and textile waste. Thrift on Thrifter!

Member 101: Circular Procurement
(VIRTUAL)
Details
To kick off Circular Economy Month, we will be joined by Katie Motta (Director, Circulate Procurement) from the Circular Innovation Council (CIC) on October 1 from 12-1pm for an introductory workshop on circular procurement!
Procurement is an underutilized leverage point that organizations are now harnessing to achieve multiple goals – from lifecycle cost savings to carbon & waste reduction to strengthening Canadian value chains. By recovering and enabling reuse, repair and refurbishment of products locally and regionally, circular procurement goes far beyond recycling: it supports procurement goals of ‘total value’. Join this session to learn more about how you can leverage a simple yet powerful circular procurement framework to deliver cost savings, embodied carbon reduction, local job creation and more.

RE:Connect – Where Community and Circularity Meet (Peterborough)
Details
Inspired by the success of Toronto’s ReMarket, RE:Connect is Peterborough’s inaugural celebration of the circular economy — a free, family-friendly event hosted by the City of Peterborough and organized by Clean Up Peterborough in partnership with more than 20 local organizations, services, and changemakers rethinking how we reuse, repair, and reduce waste.
RE:Connect showcases community solutions that keep valuable items out of landfill and put them back into local hands. Throughout the day, you’ll find opportunities to explore, learn, and take part in circular living:
– Community Collections – Drop off items for dozens of free recycling and reuse programs, all in one convenient place.
– Sharing & Access – Discover community-driven solutions like tool libraries, borrowing/rental programs, and exchange opportunities that make it easier to share resources.
– FreeMarket – A community exchange where everyone can participate — donate quality items in good, usable condition or take home something new-to-you. We’ll be collecting specific categories (guidelines shared in advance), and all donations should be clean, working, and ready for reuse. This is about circulating useful goods, not creating waste.
– Local Changemakers – Connect with businesses, artists, and organizations turning waste into resources and inspiring new ways of living sustainably.
– Hands-On Learning – Join in skill-sharing activities, demonstrations, and conversations on practical steps toward waste reduction, repair culture, and circular living.
Family-Friendly Atmosphere – Welcoming for all ages, encouraging families to learn together about building a more sustainable Peterborough.
Be part of something impactful — where community and circularity meet.
RE:Connect isn’t a vendor fair — it’s a community-building celebration of sustainability in action. Whether you swap, share, educate, or inspire, your participation helps shape a stronger circular future.
👉 Complete collection guidelines for the FreeMarket and recycling programs will be shared in advance through social media and community channels.
